How Many Registered Voters In New York State 2020

ALBANY – New York is a bluish country that is getting bluer but independents are growing at an even faster charge per unit, co-ordinate to new voter data released Mon.

The land added more than i million people to its voter rolls since the 2016 presidential election — with 5 times every bit many Democrats enrolling as Republicans over that period, enrollment information from the state Board of Elections showed.

The Democratic Political party'southward growth far outpaced Republicans on a statewide level, but Republicans did grow faster in more than than one-half of the state's 62 counties.

Across the state, the GOP grew at a faster rate than Democrats in 34 counties while Democrats grew more quickly than the GOP in the other 28.

The Republicans growth was largely rural, less-populated counties upstate, including  Chemung, Sullivan, Niagara, Orleans and much of the North Country. There were notable exceptions, however.

That includes Staten Island. The Republican Party boosted its enrollment there by 25% compared to the Democrats' 6.6% growth.

Staten Island now has 142,481 Democrats to 107,304 Republicans. And its voters announced enthusiastic: 30% of its total registered voters cast an in-person ballot during the early on voting period, the top mark in the state.

Republicans also grew at a slightly faster pace than Democrats in the New York City boroughs of the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, but that'southward largely because they were so outnumbered past Democrats at that place to brainstorm with.

Independent voters increase in NYC

The biggest growth amongst independent voters came in New York City.

Of the v counties with the fastest growth in "blank" voters, four are New York City boroughs: the Bronx (25.4% increment), Queens (21.vii%), Staten Island (21.five%) and Brooklyn (xv.vii%).

Rounding out the acme v is Niagara Canton in western New York, which saw an eighteen.seven% jump in independents.

Statewide, independents now account for 22.4% of registered voters, up from 21.7% in 2016.

Counties with the largest gains and losses

Statewide, 54 counties saw an increase in the total number of registered voters, while viii saw a loss.

The height five counties in terms of percentage increase from 2016 to 2020 were:

  2. Queens (14.6%)
  3. Brooklyn (xiii.7%)
  4. Columbia (11.2%)
  5. Manhattan (xi%)

  1. Hamilton (-3.6%)

  3. Cortland (-2.9%)
  4. Livingston (-1%)
